DW: Germany in talks to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine: reports  

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is reportedly seeking changes to the programming of the Taurus cruise missiles to avoid Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. 

The German government is in talks with arms manufacturer MBDA regarding alterations to the programming of Taurus cruise missiles before their potential delivery to Ukraine, a source told Reuters news agency on Friday, confirming an earlier report by Germany's Der Spiegel newsmagazine. 

 Kyiv has been pushing Berlin to supply it with the Taurus, a cruise missile with a range of more than 500 kilometers (300 miles) that is launched by fighter jets such as the Tornado, the F-15 or the F-18. 

While the UK and France have sent Storm Shadow and Scalp cruise missiles to Ukraine, Germany has been reluctant amid concerns that the weapon could be used on targets in Russia.

The German Taurus and American ATACMS are long range missiles that can reach Moscow from Ukraine. The Taurus missile can also fly 35 meters from the ground, making it undetectable by radar. 

And while Berlin and Washington both say they are not going to supply long range missiles to Ukraine that can strike deep into Russia, my sources in Ukraine tell me that this is what exactly what Kyiv wants to do. 

On the Russian side my sources in Moscow tell me that they expect these missiles will be striking Moscow in the coming weeks, and there is going to be a major response. Some in Russian social media are also now saying that there is talk of striking the bases that Ukraine is using in Poland in response. I do not have to tell anyone that if that becomes the case, we are going down a very slippery slope to a major NATO - Russia war.
