Daily Mail: US records the highest number of COVID cases in a single day since mid-August with more than 55,000 new infections while New York sees more than 1,000 positive tests for the first time since June
* There were 55,054 new COVID-19 cases reported by health authorities across the United States on Friday
* It's the highest figure since August 14, when 64,350 new cases were recorded
* It comes as New York reported more than 1,000 daily positive tests since June
* On Friday, the US topped more than 7 million coronavirus cases, making up 20% of the world's total
* Recently, there has been a surge in the Midwest in states such as Utah, Wisconsin, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota
* South Dakota is reporting a 166% increase in cases over the last four weeks compared to prior four weeks and Wisconsin reported record hospitalizations
* The news comes just three days after the US surpassed 200,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest in the world
The US has recorded the highest number of new coronavirus cases in a single day since August, after several states saw record daily spikes and the national total topped 7million.
There were 55,054 new COVID-19 cases reported by health authorities across the United States on Friday, a Johns Hopkins University tally shows.
It's the highest figure since August 14, when 64,350 new cases were recorded following a peak in infections in the summer.
