Reuters: Ex-envoy tells impeachment inquiry Trump ousted her based on 'false claims'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine on Friday told a House of Representatives impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump that Trump ousted her based on “unfounded and false claims” after she had come under attack by his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

Marie Yovanovitch, the ambassador who was abruptly recalled from Kiev in May, spent more than nine hours in a closed-door meeting with House members and staff. She had been expected to appear last week, but was told not to by the State Department at the behest of the White House, according to Democratic House members. Lawmakers then issued a subpoena for her appearance and she complied.

But as a former diplomat I find her complaints and sense of entitlement leaving a sour taste in my mouth. Ambassadors represent the leadership from the country that they are from. When you address them, you are "diplomatically speaking" to the Ambassador's leader. That is why politically appointed ambassadors resign when a new leader assumes power. Everyone knows a new leader wants to put his/her own loyalists in these diplomatic posts to represent him. Career diplomats like former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch are different. They walk a finer line, and if there is even a little hint that they are doing something independent, the hammer will fall down. I know from my own personal contacts through family and friends in Ukraine that U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch had irked a number of officials in President Zelenskiy's new administration. Her close ties with the former Poroshenko administration had put her under a cloud, and they did not trust her. We also now know through the media that she knew that President Trump was also not pleased with her performance as Ambassador, and that he had lost trust in her. If this is true, she should have resigned immediately. Any diplomat with integrity would. The signs were all there, she even knew it, but she refused to budge until she was recalled. And to now run to a  Congressional Committee that is doing an inquiry on impeachment to cry about all of this .... not cool.
