What could come as a major boost to the Indian Air Force and it’s Sukhoi-Su30MKI fleet, IAF is set to receive the first batch of Astra Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVR-AAM) from India’s state-owned missile maker Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) by end of this year, BDL last year received pre-induction orders for 50 Astra BVR-AAMs  and is confident to start deliveries of the first batch by end of 2019

The Astra — designated as a ‘beyond visual range air-to-air missile’ or BVRAAM — involves radically different technology challenges compared to ballistic and tactical missiles. For one, a typical Astra engagement has

both the launcher and the target moving at speeds in excess of 1,000 kmph.

Astra is the very 1st Air-to-Air missile make in India. The seeker is not Indian, but pretty much most of all the other building blocks are Indian. The Indian engineers & scientists, as one can imagine, had to go through a very steep learning curve to bring the Astra missile to fruition. So the missile’s capabilities might seem like a mirror of some of the existing missiles. A lot of critical technologies related to propulsion, guidance and control surface actuation were perfected. As a result, India will soon have a home-cooked BVR munition at a steep discount and custom made to the Air force’s requirements, replacing for most part, the R-77 and the Matra Super-530D.

Fired for the first time from a modified Su-30 MKI in May 2014, the Astra has battled steady headwinds (unsurprisingly including delays from Russia) to turn the corner and find an unusually pleased customer in the Indian Air Force. Following a rapid-fire spate of seven guided tests last September, topped off with the two ‘combat’ tests described above, the Indian Air Force was persuaded to sign on for 50 pre-production Astra missiles, its healthiest show of confidence in a program that’s still, effectively, in its proving stage.

The Indian Air Force will conduct further tests of the Astra this year and the next as part of a user trial phase before it commits to orders of the final Astra missile. DRDO expects such an order to be in the hundreds, given that the Astra will arm not just the IAF’s Su-30 MKI, but also its upgraded MiG-29s, LCA Tejas and other platforms.

Only a handful of missile builders — in the United States, Russia, Europe and China — have mastered the technologies that go into air-to-air missiles.
