Farooq meets PM Modi, says no Kashmiri wants to go to Pakistan
“American priorities in our region are changing. The old warmth towards Pakistan is just not there any more,” says Ayaz Amir, a former member of parliament and newspaper commentator.
Warnings to Pakistan by competing candidates for the White House in a US election year have also added to the strains.
“Contrary to Mr Trump’s misconception, Pakistan is not a colony of the United States of America,” said Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan, Pakistan’s interior minister, following Donald Trump’s remarks on Fox News that if elected he would get Pakistan to free Dr Afridi “in two minutes”.
Pakistan and the US have had frequent ups and downs. In 1990, Washington suspended sales of F16s on the grounds that Pakistan was producing nuclear weapons.
“First the Americans gave us F16s in the 1980s when Pakistan was a close ally and suspended their sale in 1990 only to resume the sale after the 9/11 attacks,” says one former Pakistan Air Force general. “Even if this immediate matter is resolved, no one in Islamabad will trust the Americans. I fear the feeling in Pakistan’s policy circles is increasingly to go to the Russians and the Chinese for other planes that come with a more reliable supply assurance.”
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to address the current unrest in Kashmir Valley politically. He also demanded that the Centre dust out past official reports on Kashmir to seek a way out.
During a meeting that lasted over half an hour, Abdullah briefed the PM on the growing unrest in the Valley. He urged Modi to take urgent steps to address the Kashmir issue politically, saying it was not a mere law and order problem. “Kashmiris are not Pakistanis. They have their own issues that need to addressed and they do not want to go with Pakistan,” Abdullah is learnt to have told the PM.
He also reminded Modi that at the behest of the Vajpayee government, the Jammu and Kashmir assembly had discussed autonomy that was supported by two-thirds of the House. There are also reports of five working groups constituted by the UPA-I regime under then prime minister Manmohan Singh, as well as report of interlocutors.
A group of Opposition leaders also met here to discuss the situation in Kashmir. The parties, including Left, JD(U) and the Congress, are looking to formulate a structured initiative to address the issue. CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury also met JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Tuesday along with Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and also met BJP leader Yashwant Sinha to discuss the plan of action.
