Kurdish man says he was injured, bound on flight after UK refused asylum

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A Kurdish man seeking asylum in the United Kingdom has said he was injured after being bound and handcuffed before boarding a Royal Jordanian flight from Britain to Jordan, the duration of which he spent locked in the lavatory.

"British security guards had treated me inhumanely by locking me inside a toilet with my legs and arms handcuffed," the online news portal Middle East Eye (MEE) reported Aras Ismail as saying in a voice recording.

Ismail, originally from Kirkuk, had been seeking asylum for 10 years before being picked up by the UK border agency in Gloucester in March, according to MEE.

After spending two weeks in two detention centers, according to the advocacy group the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR), he was forcibly removed, hooded, handcuffed and locked in the toilet of a Royal Jordanian flight bound for Amman on April 11. Ismail then took a connecting flight to Baghdad.

MEE added that Ismail said he was locked up to prevent other passengers from hearing his protests, and that treatment by his guards had led to injuries on his arms and head.

The Home Office said it did not comment on individual cases, according to MEE, but confirmed various restraining techniques were permitted during removals "as a matter of last resort and for the shortest possible time.”

Royal Jordanian denied Ismail was locked in a toilet but said he was handcuffed, MEE reported.

Photos supplied to MEE said to be taken a week after the flight show bruises on the man’s wrists, a bandaged head and elbow, along with bruises on the man’s upper arm.

Ismael, shortly before his removal, told MEE he feared for the safety of his parents, who had disappeared from his hometown two months ago and may have been

abducted by ISIS.

"I don't know where they are," MEE reported him as saying.

Now, MEE has reported Ismail is hiding in Iraq because he fears for his life if he returns to Kirkuk due to recent ISIS attacks in the city.

A person must be unable to live safely in any part of their own country meet the persecution eligibility requirement under British law.

“To stay in the UK as a refugee you must be unable to live safely in any part of your own country because you fear persecution there,” the UK’s immigration website reads.

Staff from the British Consulate General in Erbil hadn’t responded to requests for a statement on the issue, and the embassy in Baghdad has not published any statement regarding Ismail’s situation.

The IFIR, headed by Dashty Jamal, wrote that “around 30 asylum seekers have reportedly been rounded up and detained in facilities across the UK ahead of mass deportation plans.”

Ismail’s lawyer condemned his treatment to MEE, who reported she said she intended to "seek a full explanation and compensation for the maltreatment he has suffered.”

On April, a 17-year-old asylum seeker from Iranian Kurdistan and two friends were beaten up by a group of people after the boy was asked his nationality at a bus stop in south London.

The attack was condemned by a number of UK politicians, among them MP Jeremy Corybn and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
