Politico: United States enters World War I, April 6, 1917
On this day 100 years ago, the United States declared war on Germany, entering the worldwide conflict then known as the Great War. The struggle, which had begun in the summer of 1914, would take a decisive turn against the Central Powers after more than 2 million U.S. troops, under the command of Maj. Gen. John J. Pershing, arrived in France to bolster the Allied effort.
In 1916, Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic president, had sought reelection on the slogan, “He kept us out of war!.” He asserted that a Republican victory would trigger a war with Mexico and Germany. His stance helped him win the Western states.
